UPDATE ON PROGRESS
The consultation period closed on 25th January 2010.
On 13th January PAAL committee members delivered 746 letters of objection to Mr Ian Blake at East Sussex County Council. Of a total 1,800+ letters of objection received for all 5 sites, we believe that 1,000 related to the Piltdown/Newick site – so huge thanks to everyone who signed a letter or sent one in.
(18a) Plan 4 (zoomed in) – Newick Area of Search-1
What Happens Next?
The council now have to review all the objections and then re-draft the policy based on the information they have been given. We have been given conflicting indications of how long this will take – ranging from two months to ten. We are assured however, that unlike the initial consultation, we will be kept directly informed and we are in contact with the Council’s Communications department to ensure that the process is improved in future.
What can you do?

I strongly object to the proposal of a land raise site between Piltdown and Newick.
Comment by Lorna Holdcroft January 3, 2010 @ 7:32 pmThe significant impact on our community by the enormous increase of HGV traffic, noise, smell is too much. My daughter is dropped off by the school bus just yards from the possible site and then walks home – I will fear for her safety.
The undoubted damage to ancient woodland and wildlife habitats too must be considered. Birds, bats and newts are known to be in that area. The impact on the water table and the Ouse Flood Plain seems to make Grisling Common a most unsuitable site for land raise!
It is a travesty that this beautiful valley has got into the Top 5 of 31 potential sites. Huge lorries thundering along the A272, litter blowing along the verges, the horrendous smell of methane gas …. we cannot be complacent, our voices must be heard NOW as we do have a real chance of being removed through the consultation process. Well done PAAL for all your efforts.
Comment by Kit Roundell January 6, 2010 @ 7:49 pmThe Villages of Piltdown and Maresfield lie directly on line of the prevailing south west wind and in the summer months the stench of decomposing land fill will render the area unbearable.
The A272 quite evidently was never constructed in this area to withstand heavy vehicles – the road is in a constant state of repair/disrepair. The proposal to site landfill in this area is preposterous and quite outrageous.
Comment by terry Holman January 7, 2010 @ 4:41 pmHorrified to discover that the property I am about to exchange contracts on already has planning blight – totally inappropriate site.
Comment by Gordon Hall January 7, 2010 @ 7:09 pmSent to ESCC on 9 Jan 10
We have lived in Piltdown for over 22 years and were horrified to discover in Dec the proposed landfill site.
The route from the A23 to A272 at Piltdown passes through several villages which are totally unsuitable for heavy traffic.
Living on the A272, I cannot count over the years the number of accidents outside our house, including some fatalities. I can provide photographic evidence of an upturned car that ended up in our drive, demolishing heavy gates and writing off my car in the process.
Piltdown is renowned for the Piltdown hoax; we do not want this replaced with a rubbish dump.
There are numerous houses, including ours, which will be able to smell and see the rubbish dump. The beautiful walks and landscape will be no longer.
Surely there are more suitable sites where no houses are in spitting distance from a proposed rubbish dump?
Why were we not informed at the outset about the proposed site? We had a right to know as we will be directly affected.
Comment by Jacqueline Woollven January 9, 2010 @ 4:31 pmi strongly dissagree. to the landfill site. it will destroy what is for me a beautifull landscape and will ruin the water table, being so close to the river resulting in it polluting our drinking water.
Comment by craig harding January 10, 2010 @ 12:37 pmThis is an outrage, Piltdown is an area of natural beauty. This landfill/rise will affect house prices and enjoyment of the area not to mention the vast health risk it can put forward. These health risks were a concern with the Small Dole landfill in West Sussex and are looking more likely then originally thought. All sorts of gases come form landfills which can be very harmful to humans and animals not to mention what the rubbish can do to the soils and water drainage in the area.
Comment by Jack Phillips January 10, 2010 @ 6:09 pmBy the way, you can join the ‘Save Newick’ group on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Save-Newick/258529262320
Hundreds of people from Piltdown, Newick and other local areas have joined it.
Comment by Jack Phillips January 10, 2010 @ 6:12 pmvisit the http://www.no-landraise.org website for all the info you need to fight the plan. We are against ANY site on the beautiful Low Weald. Don,t just fight against your own site, NO site is necessary.
Comment by Nick Coleman January 10, 2010 @ 7:16 pmI’m a visitor only to the area, as my daughter lives in Piltdown and, as a result, I have grown to love the beautiful countryside and its abundant fauna. I cannot imagine the effect that such a plan will have on local residents and how much it will affect their property values? My strong intention to relocate to the area will now have, sadly, to be put on hold. As I see it, the whole district will surely be destabilized both in its amenity, its social welfare and any secure knowledge of associated property values will be placed in turmoil. To go ahead with this ill-conceived plan will devastate the area that we all love so much. Surely, those in authority must weigh carefully the irreparable damage that, most certainly, would be done.
Comment by Donald Best January 11, 2010 @ 10:11 amWe are appalled at the timing of the release of the report, your difficult website and the inability for users to obtain hard copy which seriously limits the opportunity of a democratic consultation. Many East Sussex residents will have been unable to respond even if they had been made aware of the land rise proposals.
Comment by suzanne Baker January 12, 2010 @ 7:34 pmI’m a non-resident living in Sutton Surrey but with a strong connection to the Piltdown area because of my visits to my daughter and family who live there. All throughout my life, natural history has been my main interest and, on my visits I have been intrigued by the abundance of various forms of wildlife to be seen without effort. I’ve been considering a move to the area, soas to enjoy more of it. Sadly, following the news of this possible plan, my intentions are now ‘on hold’ as I find myself in a state of disbelief at what I can only describe as a betrayal of such a lovely landscape. Reduced amenity, impaired social welfare and uncertain property values must result if the plan is implemented. I place my faith in those in authority using their commonsense and halting such a plan immediately.
Comment by D.T. Best January 13, 2010 @ 10:35 amWe have set up a website & blog to co-ordinate opposition against ESCC – see the following:

The Public Meeting in Hailsham which was cancelled due to the snow is now to take place on the 23rd January at 10.00 am in Hailsham, at the Community Centre, Vicarage Field. (Next to Wealden Council Offices).
Comment by JC January 14, 2010 @ 7:28 amIt matters not that Piltdown is not formally designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, those who know it are well aware that it IS an area of outstanding natural beauty, and having cycled and walked near the proposed landraise site for over twenty years, and again today, I find it utterly incredible and appalling that such a beautiful place could be blighted with such an abhorrent prospect.
Comment by DAVID PULLAN January 17, 2010 @ 7:13 pmI have lived in Piltdown for 33 years and although I came originally from a different part of the county I am Sussex born and bred. I know this area well and have always loved it. As stated above, it certainly is an area of outstanding natural beauty whatever the bureaucrats may say. Strictly speaking it is not entirely “natural” since it was centuries of agriculture which formed the landscape. All the more disgraceful therefore that instead of seeking a brown field site the authorities have taken the easy option and simply put a pin in the map on a bit of “open” farm land, and everything they have said since indicates clearly that they have no regard for the agricultural character of the site and its surroundings.
Comment by John Pitchford January 22, 2010 @ 4:51 pmI find it hard to believe there are really no brown field sites in this county – or in West Sussex (why do we have to act separately? why not share a site?). What about the old cement works just outside Shoreham? Huge holes in the ground; landscape already spoiled by years of cement production; road access, etc. Has that been considered?
I object strongly to this proposal, and I will help the campaign in any way I can.
Someone has taken down my ‘say no to landfill site’ overnight for some unknown reason. If anyone has a spare sign they could let me have, I would be very grateful. We will put the replacement up inside our property this time.

Totally inappropriate proposal which ESCC will attempt to push through unless properly challenged. There are enough possible sites around without having this forced on Piltdown.
Comment by Simon Smith January 24, 2010 @ 5:06 pmEAST HOATHLY & DISTRICT PRESERVATION SOCIETY
in conjunction with Residents of East Sussex Against Landraise are
WALKING THE PROPOSED SITES:
Today, SUNDAY 7TH FEBRUARY 88 concerned residents walked from Laughton Stores across green fields through LAUGHTON PARK FARM to
HALLAND PARK FARM. The history of the listed building, archaeological finds and information on landraise was displayed, tea and biscuits served and the importance of Greenfield sites recognised. Perhaps it is preaching to the converted but the fallacy of the ESCC Waste Plan must be kept at the forefront of our minds.
The proposed schedule for walking the other sites is
SUNDAY 7TH MARCH
BROOMHAM FARM/GOLDEN CROSS
SUNDAY 4TH APRIL
AN AREA SOUTH OF THE A272 BETWEEN PILTDOWN AND NEWICK
SUNDAY 2ND MAY
WICK STREET (WEST OF MIDDLE FARM)
SUNDAY 6TH JUNE
HELLINGLY (BETWEEN HACKHURST LANE AND BROAD FARM)
Obviously cooperation and input from local groups is necessary, I’ll try and contact the right people but if that’s you or you can help please call me.
Times and details are therefore to be confirmed
EVERYONE WELCOME
EACH WILL HOPEFULLY include displays of LOCAL history/INTEREST, WILDLIFE SURVEYS & ARCHAEOLOGICAL FINDS
All sites have been selected by the same criteria.
NO site identified is any more, or less, suitable than any other any.
East Sussex say they have a difficult decision: They want us to make it for them.
The decision should be NO new sites for landraise.

It is vital that the protest momentum should not be lost to the terrible prospect that this may actually go ahead. How and why this area has been highlighted as a suitable site beggars belief and local residents must protest in any way possible. The effects on property, wildlife and way of life is at stake. If you haven’t protested in some way, do it now.
Comment by Ian and Bev Goldsmith March 3, 2010 @ 8:02 pmAs Chairman of the Piltdown Action Against Landraise (P.A.A.L.)I would like to notify as many residents as possible that the rumours and comments being made that the Land raise site will not go ahead is totally untrue,we wish it was true, the answers are not yet known.
Comment by Robert White March 23, 2010 @ 2:56 pmHaving spoken to the East sussex County Council I have been told that they are only 50% through reading the 3,000 objection letters which have been received.
A decision has NOT been taken to reject the Piltdown site and it will be a few more Months before we receive any communication regarding a any form of a decision.
Please continue to give your support to P.A.A.L.
BEWARE OF PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATES COMMENTS RUNNING UP TO THE ELECTION, WE ARE STILL UNDER CONSIDERATION.
